Day 17 - The End

Well, the day had to eventually come!... so we head back up the freeway to Rialto and back on to old Route 66... past the other Wigwam Motel and on along parts of LA where you can only imagine the throb of everyday business that once kept it alive.

Old Motels and businesses litter the roadside, some still operational but maybe only just!

The Aztec Hotel wasn't operational. It's been out of service for renovations for a few years but the old building is still home to some original belt driven ceiling fans.

The 100 year old mural on the adjoining wall is protected under an historic order but the rest of the place in still undergoing a makeover. Maybe next time we'll get a full tour!

For three hours we pressed on along surface roads that once were the main drag.

Finally, the Pacific Ocean was spied through the maize of buildings lining our route and we slipped down onto Santa Monica Pier to officially record the end of the line. It's been a fun filled adventure that has more than occupied the last nearly three weeks.

But it wasn't over... a two hour run in the first of the peak hour brought us to Stillen and a tour of Steve Millen's facility with his son Kyle, which was extremely well received.

Dinner at Wilma's and a walk around Balboa Island... and of course the obligatory Balboa Bar for desert before retiring to our motel.

Like the TV adverts say... but wait, there's more!

Tomorrow will be another day... but for now the old road is done and dusted for us... until September. Why not come and join us yourselves!!
