2023 WB Day 14 - Hi From AZ
Before leaving our wigwams, we used the other end of the same Impala (from the eastbound trip) for breakfast.
Joseph City, or what's left of it on the outskirts, was our first connection with the old road.
At Jack Rabbit, that familiar backdrop in photos, dating back half a century, was again put to good use.
As was the rabbit himself!
We stood on the corner...
Drove through the corner...
And even sat on the corner in Winslow, Arizona...
Taking it easy.
There were were no mountain lions at Two Guns though...
but then the remains of the enclosures were less than secure, so that figures. It must have been a real 'win' convincing dad to stop here in the sixties.
12,000 feet tall, San Francisco Mountain can be seen from many parts of Arizona...
...including the Twin Arrows stop further west.
It's down to one arrow, and no fuel...
Across the four lane though there's a new Twin Arrows gas station...
Appropriately the new station of the same name is pumping Chevron, although the cryptic connection with the original landmark is probably coincidental.
An old bridge and a few kays on an early alignment, and we found ourselves knocking back a malt at the Galaxy Diner in Flagstaff.
Nearby Williams is home to Bearizona and while the bears were playing hard to get, there were others up for some fun...
...and the cafe is a master stroke in creative construction.
The Main Street in Williams oozes '66 with a none too subtle focus on the Forces.
But our focus was to the north at the Gran Canyon South Rim.
First the Imax movie about canyon history, then the real deal with a picnic dinner to round out the day.
All that was needed was the perfect sunset - Tick...
...and a good stead to get us back to Williams for the night - Tick!
