2024 R66 EB Day 1 - On The Road

Departing Santa Monica, we used the freeways heading west, skirting down town LA to jump between R66 attractions dotted along the way.

Arroyo Seca Patkway is part of the original road and is one of the first feeeways built in America back in the 1940s.

The Aztec Hotel is all picked up although the padlock is probably a better look than lock!

Inside shades of days gone by with pulleys delivering movement to ceiling fans.

At Cucamonga Service Station we discover an interesting history thanks to Anthony, who stopped his internet installation to explain.

Did you know that the Richfield logos represent east and west??

It was a cash only day… but hey cash is king - right!

Six Wigwam franchises once graced the road side on our route, owners using the quirky motels to lure in wary travellers! Today two remain, one here on the out skirts of LA, the other in Holbrook Az.

The history of the Golden Archs has a couple of sides!… as told at the original site.

But like any good restaurant, there is more than one side… this one not necessarily in line with the modern McDonalds narrative.

We used the freeways to advantage today to ensure we made our final destination… a quick stop to gas up…

Mark Gummer waited long enough to discover forecourt service does exist!

The Mission Inn at Riverside, just off our road, rarely disappoints. The extravagance and cross section of architecture highlights the eccentricity of the man behind it, Frank Miller.

It’s a fitting end to a great first day on the road.
