2024 WB Day 14 - Wonders of the World

Waking up inside a wigwam is not normal for most but that’s what we did in Holbrook.

It was a hood breakfast outside in the sun that was fast heading to triple figures.

West in Joseph City are old businesses left to rack and ruin.

Across the interstate is Jack Rabbit.

For miles either side, signs have been warning us it’s here.

Outside the curios shop is a rabbit you can ride, perfect for a lasting memory!

Driving across the corner in Winslow Arizona is a must.

The Eagles saw to that, but there was more to that story we would learn later in the day.

At Two Guns we pull off the interstate onto one of several small sections of Route 66. San Francisco Peak rises from the horizon to a height greater than Nee Zealand’s tallest mountain, Mt Cook.

Remnants of the cages that housed animals to attract families to stop and buy fuel and food are unused but you can tell what it must have been like to watch the mountain lions pacing their enclosures.

Time has reduced Twin Arrows to just one…

but efforts to cover the badly graffiti’d gas station have been made.

The thick shakes at Galaxy Diner in Flagstaff were well received…

…even if the odd take out container was needed.

John Moore, who was Mayor in Williams from 2008 to 2022 and is running again this year, took time out to chat to us non constituents!

He knows the importance of tourism to the region and appreciates us being in town.

He also tells a cool story of how he started the light bulb moment for Winslow mayor, many years ago when he was complaining their town had no way of attracting visitors in, like Williams did. John pointed out his town had one of the most recognized songs in the world… and the rest is history!

Thanks Graeme, for buying and wearing a tee shirt that prompted that story!

He talked of sheep farming they do in these parts and Robyn shared her own farming experience with Peggy and The Boys, which prompted John to text photos to his wife who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. She loves animals and “she will enjoy seeing these!”

Our day ended at the rim, with a picnic, overlooking the Grand Canyon.

Pictures tell that story.

The highlight of the day wasn’t an easy pick and was split… a mayor’s passion for his people, or on of the seven natural wonders of the world.
