Route 66 History

Where it all started...

It's known as Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America and the Mother Road. It was the first highway system that linked one side of USA with the another linking many existing state highways across ChicagoIllinois,  Missouri, KansasOklahomaTexasNew Mexico, Arizona and California.

They've written songs about it and even made a TV series based around life on the 2,448 mile strip of highway. Aside this it also served as the major route people used to head west in search of a better life after the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl - an almost 'road of dreams'.

Many of the same people who prospered from the  economic benefit of this national artery travelling through their state also fought to keep it alive when the new interstate highway scheme was rolled out several decades later causing its ultimate demise. US 66 was officially disbanded in 1985 but several states have recognised 'Historic Route 66' and have designated it a National Scenic Byway.

'New Old' History

As a result of these passionate people dotted throughout every state the legend of the Mother Road continues stronger than ever. It's history is truly a unique mix of old derelict buildings that continue to decay, others painstakingly restored as they were in their hey day and yet more born out of the need or desire for people to re-create the magic.
